In each session of the legislature there may be 1200 bills. Will you comment on all of them? Or will you just comment on bills that interest you, for a reason of your own? If so, how will you find them?

First of all, do realize that up until certain deadlines are met, bill requests (BDRs) and bills are being added all the time. If you have subscribed to Personal Legislation Tracking (PLT), you will have to Add Subscriptions every so often (daily/weekly) to make sure your list is up to date.

1. You can choose to comment on bills that are “agendized” for the coming week. You find that list on the Upcoming Meetings page of The Friday Night Status Report,
https://passion4reason.wordpress.com/the-friday-night-status-report/

The reason that I am sending you there, instead to the source on the PLT Home page, is that the PLT home page will show you only the bills that you are tracking. The only way it will show you all bills on the agenda for the coming week is if you have an unlimited account. I have one, courtesy of our Assemblyman Al Kramer, and therefore I offer you its results as a service of the CCRP-LAC.

2. You can make the legislature’s software work for you by typing in words that describe the topic or issue you are interested in. For example, “commerce tax.”

2a. Search the name, title and summary of bills.

Go to the legislature’s home page http://www.leg.state.nv.us/

In the top right corner, click on NELIS. Then click on Bills. It takes you to
https://www.leg.state.nv.us/App/NELIS/REL/79th2017/Bills/List

In the search field under Bills, type in a word or phrase. For example, if you type in “education,” it will show you a list of 132 bills, not all of which you might consider to be relevant . You will have to be more precise, and the legislature’s tech support team has been providing additional help, as shown in Step 3 below.

2b. Search the text of bills.

Go to the legislature’s home page http://www.leg.state.nv.us/

On the bottom of the page, on the bottom line, the first item on the left is “Search.” Click on that. It takes you to http://www.leg.state.nv.us/Site/Search/search.cfm

Look for
79th (2017) Session
     Bill Text

Click on Bill Text.
It takes you to 79th (2017) Session Bill Text search
http://search.leg.state.nv.us/79th2017/Bills/79th2017_Bills.html
On this page, type in the words you want to search for, then click on Search.

Let’s say you typed in “commerce tax.” It will display the list of bills that have “commerce tax” somewhere in the body of the bill. See List of Bills — COMMERCE TAX

Please  note that some lists can be rather long. For example, if you type in “education,” then you will get a list of 469 files in which the word “education” appears somewhere in the text, not all of which you might consider to be relevant. You will have to be more precise, and the legislature’s tech support team has been providing additional help, as follows.

3. Now let’s say you can’t think of any good words to type in. The legislature is here to help you again:

The Subject Index
https://www.leg.state.nv.us/Session/79th2017/Reports/TablesAndIndex/2017_79-index.html
gives you an alphabetical list of topics and the corresponding bill numbers.

If you want to be more precise, similar lists show you the NRS titles, chapter and sections and and the corresponding bill numbers:

NRS Chapters Proposed to be Amended by Addition
https://www.leg.state.nv.us/Session/79th2017/Reports/TablesAndIndex/2017_79-Chapter.html

NRS Sections Proposed to be Amended or Repealed
https://www.leg.state.nv.us/Session/79th2017/Reports/TablesAndIndex/2017_79-Section.html

NRS Titles Proposed to be Amended by Addition
https://www.leg.state.nv.us/Session/79th2017/Reports/TablesAndIndex/2017_79-Title.html

Remember that these lists change as new bills are introduced.

3a. To find good words to search for in the bills, you can also look in the US and NV Constitutions, and in the Carson City, Nevada and national GOP platforms:
